National Premier Soccer League team Jacksonville United FC opens season in Chattanooga

Jacksonville United Football Club (JUFC) opened their inaugural National Premiere Soccer League (NPSL) season on the road Saturday night against the defending NPSL Southeastern Division champions Chattanooga FC (CFC) in front of an announced crowd of 1,175 fans.

JUFC opened with momentum and fresh legs and controlled the first 20-25 minutes. Then Chattanooga settled in and began putting the visitors under sustained pressure. CFC’s John Calderwood knocked a header off the crossbar at the 30-minute mark after a cross from Mark Beattie. Russell Courtney missed a header on a corner-kick play about five minutes later as Chattanooga began maintaining more possession than Jacksonville. Calderwood had a fast break shot saved by JUFC goalkeeper Ian Levine (Fletcher High School and Embry Riddle graduate) a few minutes after that.

Most of the action for the rest of the half was played in the midfield, as neither team mounted a severe scoring threat.

In the 2010 tournament, Woods withdrew six holes into the final round with a neck injury.

Practice rounds begin Monday, and the competition, featuring the best field in golf, begins Thursday.
