UPDATE: All dogs adopted at Pet Center after outbreak

UPDATE, 11/22/13: All dogs at the St. Johns County Pet Center have been adopted, according to the Friends of St. Johns County Pet Center Facebook page. No adoptable dogs were euthanized.

Original story from 11/19 below:

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Pet Center is always looking for families to adopt dogs, but this time, there's a deadline.

The center is experiencing an outbreak of a Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease, and the dogs must go.

Tuesday, Pam and Matthew Fiddler of Nassau County saw a Facebook post and headed straight to the St. Johns County Pet Center.

Staff at the Pet Center discovered an positive results for a Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease in its dog kennel.

"It's a tough bacteria to treat," said Paul Studivant who runs the Pet Center.

"When the test result came back, it was very disheartening because we keep a very clean kennel," he added.

That means, the entire 8,000-square-foot facility needs to be decontaminated, but first all the dogs inside must be adopted out by this weekend.

Last week, the facility had 50 dogs, but as of Tuesday there were 10 still needing homes.

To help find the dogs homes, the Pet Center is waiving all adoption fees and "we're actually providing free antibiotics," Studivant noted.  That's to help the adopted dogs overcome the illness, which is like a bad cold.

"We've been open seven years and this is the first time we've had to deal with it," Studivant said.

The Fiddlers took a Labrador from the kennel outside to visit with him, and after a little while, they decided to adopt him.

"It feels pretty good," Pam Fiddler smiled. "I think he's going to be a lot of fun we when get him out of his shell."

That's one more dog who has a home and one more family who helped the pet center deal with a tough problem.
