PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - A 10-year-old who went missing Thursday night was found minutes after an Emergency Communications Network was used in St. Johns County.

The youngster vanished from his residence in the 300 block of San Juan Drive Thursday night around 8 p.m. while riding his bike.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office received a call from the child's mother and used the county's ECN, CodeRED, to alert the community of the missing child.

Within minutes the boy was spotted not too far from his home by a recipient of the CodeRED alert.

The 10-year-old was found safe and unharmed and was returned to his parents.

The CodeRED system is used by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office to send critical communications. "CodeRED allows law enforcement officials to get specific messages to targeted audiences. It is used to disseminate information about ongoing events, public safety issues, missing persons cases, evacuations due to natural disasters," added Sgt. Catherin Payne with the St John's County Sheriff's Office.

Landlines are automatically included, however cell phones can also be registered. Residents can also sign up for CodeRed text and email alerts.

"It is highly encouraged that citizens go to the CodeRed website and sign up for alerts to the cell phones," said Sgt. Payne.
