Four Loko Lurks at High School Parties

Most of us remember the high school party movies of the 80s. Party mischief included making a dream girl out of a doll, the most popular girl in school getting a bad haircut and an entrepreneurial freshman flashing an upper classman’s panties for a buck a peep. 

Unfortunately, it’s not the 80s.

High school parties today involve a whole new breed of drugs and alcohol, including Four Loko, nicknamed by some, “blackout in a can.”

Operation-Medicine Cabinet, March 12th

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is hosting another “Operation-Medicine Cabinet” this month in the Northeastern and Central parts of the county. This is a Pharmaceutical Take Back program, a prescription for safe kids and a clean environment.

The operations will take place on Saturday, 12 March, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at the Gate Petroleum, 10970 U.S. 1 North (corner of U.S.1 and Valley Ridge Blvd.) as well in the parking lot at the Flagler Imaging Center, 101 Health Park Blvd.

Take Care Clinics Offering Discounted Physicals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Though the cold weather lingers, summer is not far away, and with that comes sports and activities for children.

Take Care Clinics at area Walgreen's stores are offering physical examinations for children for $35 through the end of April. The normal cost is $60.

The exams will make sure children are up to date on immunizations and are fit for sports and camp activities.

"Sports and camp physicals are a great opportunity for families to interact with a trusted health care professional who can identify children who might be at risk for illness or injury during certain activities," said Sandra Festa Ryan, RN, MSN, CPNP, FAANP and chief nurse practitioner officer for Take Care Health Systems. 

Area Schools at the Top in Fundraiser

Students at Landrum Middle School in Ponte Vedra and Lakeside Elementary School in Orange Park have learned that their pennies really can add up to helping save lives. Landrum Middle School students raised $5,069 and Lakeside Elementary School students raised $4,427 by collecting spare change while participating in the 15th-annual Olive Garden’s Pasta for Pennies program to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS).

Bird Disease Detected in State

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is currently monitoring a Virulent Exotic Newcastle Disease diagnosis which occurred in Cormorants in Pinellas County last week.  Exotic Newcastle Disease is an extremely contagious and fatal foreign avian disease that affects most bird species but is not life threatening to humans.  Human contact with Exotic Newcastle Disease may cause minor irritations such as pink eye or skin irritations.
