3rd Annual "Food for Fines" at the St. Johns County Public Library

The St. Johns County Public Library System will kick off its 3rd Annual “Food for Fines” program next week. Food for Fines permits patrons to bring one sealed, non-expired, non-perishable food item to the library in exchange for each $1 in overdue fines. The program will run November 8 – December 22, 2010. Last year, more than 10,000 food items were collected, surpassing the 8,000 items collected in 2008.

Cathedral Arts Hosts 1st Annual Kickball Tournament

Pull on your tube socks, lace up your sneaks and get ready to score!  Cathedral Arts is hosting its 1st Annual Kickball Tournament on Saturday, November 6th starting at noon at Carver Park in Jacksonville Beach.  Participants must be 21 years or older. Registration is $20 which includes your tournament packet, t-shirt, one raffle ticket for post-game prizes, and one free beer at the after party which takes place at Mellow Mushroom in Jacksonville Beach.

The Sensuous Shell by John Kuss

Exhibit Opens November 9 and runs through January 8, 2011 at the Beaches Museum & History Center. John Kuss is a fine art photographer who lives in Jacksonville Beach, Florida and has photographing for over 20 years. John has worked with Getty Images and Corbis Images in New York City. “There is something magical about shells” Johns says. John has a unique technique he used for some of his most popular pieces.

Beards for Babies

For the next several months you may see some deputy sheriff’s sporting stubble on their faces. This isn’t a new fad, but a fundraiser within the Sheriff’s Office for the March of Dimes. For the fourth year in a row, St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar has allowed employees to sport beards with a donation of $50 each to the March of Dimes. The fundraiser will go through 31 January.

Hubbard House Announces Winner in Youth Art Contest

Mariah Blanton, an 8-year-old from Glen St. Mary, Florida, is the grand prize winner in Hubbard House’s first-ever Domestic Violence Awareness Month Youth Art Contest. She will receive a party for 10 at Jungle Quest, an indoor facility for kids that offers rock climbing, zip lines, tree houses and more.

St. Johns Town Center Holiday Spectacular Saturday, November 20th

Holiday shoppers and families are invited to make merry with a full day of free festivities at St. Johns Town Center, culminating with a spectacular tree lighting and fireworks show. Retailers will also offer great holiday shopping opportunities, in-store promotions and specials.
