St. Johns County Burn Ban Extended for 90 Days

St. Johns County Burn Ban Extended for 90 Days

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- After extending the county-wide burn ban every seven days for weeks, but with no long-term relief in sight, today the county commission passed an emergency ordinance extending the ban further.

Because of extreme fire danger due to lack of moisture in the air and on the ground, the commission put a burn ban in place in December, with the usual seven-day term.

In session today as the ban was set to expire, the commission extended the ban for 90 days and added steeper penalties for violations, including a fine of $500 and imprisonment for up to 60 days.

The fire chief, pressing for the action, said recent rains have done little to alleviate the fire danger.

The ban covers all outdoor burning except cooking (grills and hibachis) and campfires that are within a metal ring and within an approved camping area.
