Local Dr. Launches Essay Contest to Ask Students to Solve Public Education Problems

Scot Ackerman, M.D. of First Coast Oncology has announced his third annual essay contest for local high school students, “Students Who Care.”  The topic for this year’s contest is: “Plato said ‘Necessity is the mother of invention.’ In what innovative ways would you solve the challenges that the public education system faces today?”

Dad-Daughter Date Night Planned for Military Fathers

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- It might just be the break from texting and video games you crave as a father.

Girls Inc. of Jacksonville is inviting active duty military Dads to bring their daugters to a special Dad-Daughter dinner/date night.  The non-profit group is offering a discount on tickets for the October 1st event.

There will be a dinner and dancing for the Dad-Daughter teams.

The GATE Foundation Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Art with a Heart in Healthcare

Art with a Heart in Healthcare has been named the beneficiary of this year’s GATE Foundation Charity Golf Tournament. Approximately 300 players will participatein the invitation-only golf tournament, which is held annually to support local charities. The event is to be held at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club on Sept. 28, 2011. A dinner and silent auction will follow at The Outpost in Ponte Vedra. Art with a Heart in Healthcare is the only organization in Jacksonville dedicated exclusively to arts in healthcare for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

Local Business to Observe Digital Moment of Silence for Sept 11

Jacksonville will observe a digital out-of-home (OOH) moment of silence for one hour and 17 minutes on September 11th. More than 450 of Clear Channel’s digital billboards in 23 markets across the nation will display the OAAA’s rotating memorial ad creative, reading “Pause and Reflect,” to commemorate the moments on September 11, 2001 during which American Airlines Flight 11 collided into the World Trade Center’s landmark North Tower, United Airlines Flight 175 impacted the South Tower, American Airlines Flight 77 hit the western side of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Tools 4 Schools Desperate for More Supplies

The St. Johns County Education Foundation (SCJEF) is wrapping up its two and a half week long school supply donation drive this weekend as a part of its annual Tools 4 Schools program. The drive began in early August with public and internal donation sites located at select businesses in the area.
