Brooks Rehabilitation Employees and Medical Teams International Helping Disabled in Haiti | Community Spirit
Medical Teams International will send four teams of physical and occupational therapists from Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida to Haiti throughout the spring and summer of 2012, in order to provide rehabilitative care to those still suffering in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. The volunteer therapists will work with Medical Teams International’s Haiti Advantage program in Les Cayes, providing care in the outpatient prosthetics and orthotics clinic and well as the local hospital.
The volunteer effort referred to as "Project Haiti" is led by Brooks physical therapist Ashley Henegar. Henegar and the Brooks Project Haiti Team have coordinated a variety of fundraising projects to cover travel expenses for the sixteen volunteers, who will travel in teams of four, in 2-week rotations that span from April to June.
As a non-profit organization, Brooks Rehabilitation is supportive of their employees desire to serve, and is matching their fundraising efforts up to $5,000. "The Brooks Project Haiti team has been truly amazing," says Sally Liaw, Brooks’ Director of Corporate Marketing and Communications. "We are happy to support their efforts for such a great cause. "
In the past two years, Medical Teams International’s Haiti Advantage program has provided 2,464 rehabilitation sessions and much-needed prosthetics to those disabled in the earthquake. "Providing good physical rehabilitation care is quite challenging as there is currently no training program in Haiti," says program director, June Hanks. "In a country with an estimated 10 million persons with disabilities, the expertise offered by volunteers from other countries is critical to meeting needs. The volunteers come to learn, teach, provide care, and share. We’re grateful to Brooks Rehabilitation professionals for their contribution."
Medical Teams International’s Haiti Advantage program empowers persons with physical disabilities to function independently and fully within the immediate community and society of Haiti. The program is the only full-time, comprehensive, professionally staffed program serving persons with disabilities in southwest Haiti.
