In Shane Matthews' first season as the head football coach at Nease High School, his team finished with a (5-5) record.

The Panthers hope to improve on that mark this season.

Owner searches for stolen Virgin Mary Statue

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- Have you seen her? The Virgin Mary is missing. Police said a statue of her was stolen from a well known St. Augustine home.

The owner is sharing their story with FCN's David Williams in hopes that someone might find her.

Driving along A1A along the Atlantic Ocean in the nation's oldest city, you will see something that resembles what an Irish castle might have looked like 1,000 years ago

Rusty Ickes built Castle Otttis with another person by hand beginning in 1984.

"We dedicated this structure, monument to Jesus Christ," Ickes said.

It's a place where people of all faiths are welcome.

"We built it as a place of peace upon the earth," Ickes said.

Under the cross...visible from some of the castle's natural windows...was a statue of the Virgin Mary that is very important to his faith and family.

Attack on beach leaves three dogs dead and 1 owner injured

SOUTH PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Kathy Doolittle is grief stricken over the loss of her Pomeranian named Cassidy.

"She was our life. Just look at her face," she said as she pointed to a picture of Cassidy. "She lit up the room."

Early Friday evening, Doolittle said she and Cassidy walked from her South Ponte Vedra Beach home to the beach, and she saw a man walking her neighbor's two dogs on the beach.  

They were pit-bull mixes, according to St. Johns Animal Control.

"I saw them, and I'm scared enough of them. I thought, 'I'm just going to go back.' I picked her up and turned around to go," Doolittle remembered.

She said her neighbor's dogs attacked her and Cassidy at the end of her path to the beach.

Two dogs killed in fight

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Two dogs have died after an encounter on the beach Friday night.

According to St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Catherine Payne, a woman was walking on the beach when she passed another man walking his dog.

The man's dog began to attack the woman's dog and while trying to break up the fight, the woman sustained minor injuries.

The woman's small dog died and the man, while trying to pull his dog away, somehow killed his dog, Payne said.

Neighbors in one Ponte Vedra neighborhood are banding together to save trees that are scheduled to be cut down.

Dillon Bates discusses Tennessee commitment, upcoming season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- This past spring, Ponte Vedra High School linebacker Dillon Bates was voted as this area's top recruit in the class of 2014.

Bates who recently made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Tennessee stopped by the First Coast News studio on Sunday afternoon to discuss that decision.  He also spoke about how his high school team is shaping up heading into this season.

Advanced Disposal moves headquarters to Ponte Vedra

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- Governor Rick Scott paid Ponte Vedra a visit Monday, announcing the relocation of Advanced Disposal's corporate headquarters there.

The governor stopped by to help cut the ribbon to the new facility. Recently, the company  merged with two other waste services companies.

The merger makes Advanced Disposal the largest privately-owned waste services company in the U.S.  

"In a little over two years, the unemployment rate in our state's gone from 11.1 percent to 7.1 percent. And it's because of companies like Advanced Disposal who are growing in the state, expanding in the state, moving corporate offices into the state or around the state," Scott said.

Advanced Disposal plans to add 85 jobs and invest $4 million here as part of its expansion.
